92% of disability services professionals say that improving retention rates is important to their department, and no wonder - a study from 2011 identified that only 27% of students registered with Disability Services graduated within a 6-year timeframe.

In Fall 2022, we surveyed over 1000 Glean users to understand how using Glean to take notes independently was affecting their learning and grades. This year, our focus was particularly on those most at risk of dropping out: first year and ‘at risk’ students (those with a GPA of less than 2).

Previous research has proved that the act of taking and reviewing notes is very important for learning.

With note taking, we capture 35% of information from a lecture. So for an hour long lecture that’s only remembering 21 minutes! We leave behind 65% of all information that we listened to in class. Without note taking we leave behind even more.

And, if notes aren’t refined and reviewed, a further 80% of information is lost after class.

The connection between note taking and effective learning runs deep and taking independent notes and using them effectively improves learning.
