A breakdown of the charities and good causes Glean has been privileged to support this year
Once again, Glean has marked the start of the Christmas Holidays by making a special donation to charity. This has become a proud company tradition in recent years, and we’re excited to close out 2019 with another £10,000 award.
Last year, we split this gift between Save the Children, Giving Directly and World Vision. This year, we continue our support for Save the Children and Giving Directly, but also include local charity Simon on the Streets in our split of the funds.
Living our values
Our annual Christmas gifts are not just one-off gestures. They’re born from our values as a company. A primary motivator for Glean and its work is the belief that ‘people and their emotions matter‘.
This influences not only how we deal with customers, but the kind of culture we promote and nurture in the workplace.
It’s this culture that has produced our choice of local charity. Voted for by employees, Simon on the Streets is a perfect demonstration of these values in action.
Simon on the Streets – ‘turning rough lives around’
Simon on the Streets provides front-line support to homeless people and rough sleepers in our home city of Leeds. Their work engages some of the hardest people to reach in the community, providing practical, emotional and long-term support.
They do an incredible job in very challenging circumstances, and we’re thrilled to be able to support the work they do with our donation.
Save the Children – ‘Every Child Deserves a Future’
Save the Children do whatever it takes to save children, transforming their lives and the future we share’, and have now been doing it for 100 years.
Giving Directly – ‘We give cash directly to people living in poverty’
Giving Directly does exactly that. Donations go directly to some of the world’s poorest people, achieving real change and impacting hundreds of thousands of lives.
How our ‘Sonostars’ donated
Each quarter, Glean employees are asked to nominate a colleague they believe has gone above-and-beyond. The person with the most nominations becomes our ‘Sonostar’, and is presented with their award in a company-wide ceremony.
This is a chance for us to recognize the good work of a colleague, but also to donate £1,000 to a charity of our Sonostar’s choosing.
Here’s how our Sonostars chose to donate this year:
Amie chose to donate to Effective Altruism, a foundation that aims to put your money to work doing the most good that it can, for the most people.
Andy’s Man Club’s ultimate goal is to halve the number of suicides among men under 45 years old in the UK. How? By providing space to do something many men struggle with – talking.
Andy’s Man Club is helping to remove mental health stigmas and create conversations that save lives, work that Ben was thrilled to support through his donation.
Freddie is a dog’s best friend. So it made perfect sense for him to honor his four-legged pals with a donation to the UK’s largest dog welfare charity.
Dogs Trust’s purpose is to ‘bring about the day when all dogs can enjoy a happy life, free from the threat of unnecessary destruction’.
Leeds Cares helps healthcare workers in Leeds deliver the best quality care by raising funds for equipment, services, education and research.
Craig’s donation will help deliver better services for patients across the city.
The BATA Sponsored Walk
Glean is also proud to support the annual British Assistive Technology Association Sponsored walk, this year raising £262.50 for the cause.
As 2019 draws to a close, we’d like to thank all of you for supporting us in what we do. It’s been an exciting year, and we’ve enjoyed every last second we’ve spent with our customers and the disability support community at large.
We’re now reaching more learners than ever before. And as we continue to grow in 2020 and beyond, giving back will always be a priority.
Do you want to make a real difference?
Glean are always on the lookout for bright, talented people to help us achieve our mission.
We want to change the lives of over one million learners. Could you help us get there?
